The air is crisp and the leaves are beginning to turn, but there is still some warmth in the air and (something we have not had an abundance of this year) clear skies and sunshine. Somehow, the tomato plants survived that very cold period last week, and we will be harvesting them for a few more weeks unless the weather turns again. This weather will encourage the last fall plantings of lettuce, bok choi, and kohlrabi to size up. It also makes for great walking weather – we love to walk around the farm on evenings when we are not too busy, checking out the last of the prairie flowers (everything has gone to seed but the purple asters and goldenrod). We hope that you can join us this tonight, next Monday, or on October 18th to check out the fall farm for yourselves!

Well, fall is certainly upon us up here. On Saturday, I checked the forecast and was shocked to see that FROST was predicted overnight. Just for comparison, the average first frost date for our area is sometime in mid to late October, and the record first frost date is September 20th, 1991. It would have been a weather shocker if it had actually frosted, but luckily, the temperatures stayed in the balmy low 40s. This means that we will probably have at least a few more weeks of tomatoes, and that the celery avoided frost burn. And by the end of this week, we are promised a return to sun and warmth. I’ll believe it when I see it.

After a brief hot spell, it looks like rain and more cold weather are on their way. This must be the beginning of fall! Today and tomorrow, Nick will be picking as many tomatoes as possible to save them from any potentially damaging rains on Tuesday night. Visit the state climatologist’s blog for a rundown of how this summer’s weather compared to past summers, and for insight into what we can expect in the coming months.
