In the Field

It’s been a lovely week out on the farm! Nick’s grandmother was visiting us from Oregon, so I got to spend a lot of time out in the field while he hung out with her and with the baby. We had temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s, no rain, and clear blue skies – boy did I luck out:) As much as I have loved being with little Ray this season, it is nice to get out and harvest a little bit. Even Nick admits that I am speedier than he is, but I think that might just be because my hands are closer to the ground. In any case, it was a treat to see how big the celeriac has grown and to hunt down the last of the big fennel bulbs. And Nick did do all of the washing, so it was a good deal for me!

In the Field

All of a sudden it is October! And what better way to celebrate the first week of October than a nice early dusting of snow? It was cold on Saturday, but the temperatures have warmed up and it looks like this next week will be, if a little overcast, at least comfortably warm. No harm done to any of the crops – the tomatoes were on their way out already, and everything that is left can stand a little frost. The taste of some thing, like the collards and brussels sprouts, even benefit from the cold weather.

In the Field

We are super excited about the brussels sprouts this year! I’m not sure whether I made an error in the greenhouse plan, or if someone got a little over-enthusiastic during the seeding, but we have a lot of them. Usually, brussels sprouts (and their relatives from the family Brassica, like kale, collards, turnip greens and cabbage) have a harder time of it than other crops. There are two pests that plague Brassicas: flea beetles and cabbage looper moths. Additionally, brussels sprouts are heavy feeders, and it can be challenging to time the planting right so that the sprouts mature early enough.
